Train Travel in China

China has one of the biggest and busiest rail networks in the world and trains link almost every town and city. Chinese trains are safe, modern and comfortable. It's a perfect way to see the "real china", especially the countryside. We feel also that if you take an overnight train you are getting yet another Travel experience. Often you will be saving money on hotels while also getting from A to B at the same time!

A lot of effort has gone into preparing this section of our Award Winning web site, but if you feel we have not covered anything please do not hesitate to ask;

For both long and short journeys the seats are very comfortable. If you are spending a night on a train we recommend a Soft Sleeper. The most important trains are the Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Hong Kong, Beijing-Xian and some other routes also have deluxe first class soft class with 2-berth compartments with private toilets as well as the normal 4-berth soft class cabins.

For a timetable summary of the Major Train Routes please click here.

What do these first class sleeper cabins look like?

Most long-distance trains have a restaurant car, serving full meals at excellent value.

The two most popular rail journeys that we are asked to organise, are:

  1. The Beijing to Lhasa (Tibet) Railway - (including the Qinghai-Tibet railway).
  2. The route into China from Russia otherwise referred to as the Trans Siberian railway.

Please note, although the route from Beijing gets all the publicity what the travel media don't tell you is that there are also Direct passenger trains from Shanghai & Guangzhou in the south of China to Lhasa. Please ask us for details of how to incorporate this or indeed any train travel into your holiday.
