Tibet
Tibet is known as the 'roof of the world'. The scenery is breathtaking, the religious monuments and practices are overwhelmingly picturesque and sometimes very moving. The Tibetan people are very friendly and welcoming.
Beijing claims a centuries old sovereignty over the Himalayan region, but the allegiances of many Tibetans lie with the exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, seen by his followers as a living god.
In 1959, after a failed anti-Chinese uprising, the 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet and set up a government in exile in India. Most of Tibet's monasteries were destroyed in the 1960's and 1970's during China's cultural revolution.
Once in Tibet you enter one of the most isolated parts of the world. The plateau is at a average height of about 4500 metres above sea level, and is surrounded on all sides with mountain ranges including the world famous Himalayas. The plateau is also the starting place of some of the most famous rivers in Asia.
