A number of options and tour lengths are available for this incredible journey. The price and duration here are the minimum for this tour – once we have an idea of how long you want to spend travelling by foot and your ability we will put together a program.

A visit to this area can be combined with any other attraction in China. However if you just want to escape the crowds and experience the real China then this part of Yunnan Province is excellent.

How do I get there? Normally from the small airport at Li Jiang. Your drive to the first guest house would normally be a few hours. If you are just visiting the Yunnan Province the indirect international flight would most likely arrive in Kunming, Yunnan's capital city. Please ask if you would like train travel incorporated into your trip to China as it is a great way to see the countryside in this part of China.

Is it strenuous? Once we have an idea of how long you want to spend travelling by foot (and your ability) we will put together a program that involves anything from light walking to heavy trekking, normally anything from 2 hours to 5 hours a day.

The Spring Guest House A fantastic family run operation highly recommended for its stunning surroundings and mountain views. There are just 18 rooms on site. Each room has an en suite bathroom with western toilet facilities.

The Tea Horse Guest House This guesthouse benefits from spectacular views and is located in the dramatic countryside that surrounds the Gorge area. Expect a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and very tasty food (all freshly cooked on site). Double or twin rooms are available.

Tina’s Guest House One of the most famous guest houses on the Tiger Leaping Gorge route. There is an onsite restaurant that serves both good Chinese and Western food. The guest house is quite large (over 100 beds) and also features a common room and a car rental service.

Tour Sample A

Day 1

From Lijiang, 2 hour drive to the The Spring Guest House for a 5 night stay. Rest of the day at leisure. Relax and enjoy the views.

Day 2

Trek (3 hours) to the top of Haba Mountain Hill which peaks at 3000 metres. The Gorge is beautiful in itself, but this trip has an amazing view of the surrounding countryside. You will also view the Three Gorge section points and the Jade Dragon snow mountain range. Later visit a typical small holding.

Day 3

Trek (4 hours) around a big waterfall and bamboo forest.

Day 4

Drive (30 mins) to the Gorge's high trail. We will then trek back to the guest house passing by a Yacha village and a Bendiwan village and as well as many small waterfalls.

Day 5

Drive (1 hour 30 mins) to Haba village. Then hike (3 hours) to see the traditional Naxi and Yi people. See the Hui minority people working in the rice terrace fields. Lunch with a local family. Return drive (2 hours) to guest house.

Day 6

Trek down to the Gorge river then hike back (2 hours). Return drive to Lijiang.

Tour Sample B

Day 1

From Lijiang drive (2 hours) to the town of Qiaotou. Then trek to the Naxi Family Guest House. After lunch trek 1 hour (hardest part of your trek) on the '28 bends'. We will stop for refreshments at the 28 bends Guest House - here you see the best views of the gorge and the Yangtze River below. Walk down the pedestrian path and along the mountain crossing through a beautiful woodland area and reach the Tea Guest House to have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 2

Today hike (2 hours) to get to a Half Way Guest House, rest and then continue down to Tina's house to have lunch. On the way we will encounter many waterfalls and you will be able to appreciate the size of the Gorge. We will hike across to Yixiantian and reach the Walnut Garden area. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the Spring Guest House.

Day 3

Trek (3 hours) to Xindukou. Take the boat to cross the Jinsha River. Once across the other side we climb the path to Daju where we will have lunch. Drive (3.5 hours) back to Lijiang.
