Situated at the foot of the Himalayas in the Terai lowlands, it covers an area of 932 square kilometres and because of the areas sub-tropical climate contains a vast array of animal and plant life. There are a total of 43 species of large mammals, 526 species of birds, 150 different types of butterflies, 126 species of fish and 49 species of reptiles within the park, including some of the rarest to be found in Asia, such as the single-horned Asiatic rhino, Gharial Crocodile and Bengal tiger.
