Xi'an
Xi'an City is the capital of Shaanxi Province and is steeped in history. Previously known as Chang'an, Xi'an served as China's Capital City through a number of dynasties and has a number of famous tourist attractions.
The Terra-cotta Warriors
Situated approx 45 minutes from Xi'an city centre, and considered the Eighth Wonder, the terra-cotta warriors and horses are Shaanxi Province's premier tourist attraction.
The site comprises of 3 pits, with the largest, pit 1, containing over 6000 life size warriors and horses.
Hua Qing Hot Springs and Pool
Situated approx 30 kilometres from the city centre and also built during the Tang Dynasty, the Hua Qing Hot Springs and Pool have been a popular bathing site, since ancient times.
In fact Yang Guifei, one of Emperor Xuanzong's concubines was a famous regular visitor.
Set at the foot of Mt. Lishan, it is extremely picturesque, with its pavilions, towers, terraces and surrounding ancient cypresses and pines.

The Ancient City Wall
Built during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), the city wall is rectangular in shape and approx 13 kilometres in length. On each of its four sides are found the N/S/E/W gates, all of which hold some form of cultural exhibition.
The Greater and Lesser Wild Goose Pagodas
Pagodas were originally constructed during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) in the 3rd year of Emperor Gaozong.
The Greater Wild Goose Pagoda is a seven-storied structure, standing approx. 65 metres tall. The Lesser Wild Goose Pagoda has 13 stories and stands approx. 45 metres tall. Both Pagodas have traditional Chinese architectural characteristics and are both under state protection.

There are many other tourist attractions within Xi'an City all of which can be easily reached from the city centre. The Shaanxi History Museum and Xi'an Museum of Stele Forest are both well worth a visit.
Sample the hustle and bustle of the Muslim Quarter, with its centrepiece being the Great Mosque, again built during the Tang Dynasty. Then you have both the Bell and Drum Towers, in the heart of the city. For evening entertainment in the city, you won't fail to be impressed with the Tang Dynasty Show, which combines the elegance and beauty of traditional dance with the humour and sounds of ancient musical instruments. Whilst watching the performance you also have the option of sampling the famous Dumpling Banquet, with its variety of meat and vegetable dishes.
Less than 2 hours by air or an over-night train journey from Beijing, Xi'an is a must for all visitors to China.
