Hangzhou

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and was one of China's seven ancient capitals. Located on the Qiantang River and at the southern end of the Grand Canal, Hangzhou is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and is divided into two national scenic zones.

West Lake Scenic and Historic Interest Zone

Covering an area of almost 50 square kilometres, with the West Lake at its centre, this area has scenic spots in abundance and a great many historic sites:

Lingyin Temple is one of China's famous Buddhist temples and was built in the early Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 - 420) by the Indian monk Huili. Inspired by the areas quietness and beauty, he originally named it 'The Temple of Soul's Retreat'.

Six Harmony Pagoda was built in during the Northern Song Dynasty (960 - 1127) and stands almost 60 metres tall.

The Broken Bridge is one of three bridges by West Lake. It faces the mountains and in the winter provides the best scenic view of the lake.

The Wangjiang Pavilion can be reached by climbing Jiguanlong Hill, via a flight of steps. The climb is well worth it, as the views from the pavilion of the Qiantang River are superb.
