Chengde

Chengde is located in the Yanshan Mountains of north Hebei Province, 163 kilometres from Beijing. During the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) it was a city of great importance, both politically and culturally. It has a long multi-cultural history and many tourist attractions.

The Mountain Resort was constructed during the reigns of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. It is the largest imperial garden in China, enclosed by a wall over 10 kilometres long. The resort is divided into two areas: the Palace Quarter and the Garden Area, with the latter sub-divided into the lake, mountain and plain zones. Within the resort there are 72 scenic spots, equally designated by the two Emperors.

The Great Wall at Jinshanling stretches for over 20 kilometres and is the longest and best-preserved section of the wall.

The Eight Outlying Temples are a fine example of Chengde's multi-cultural history. A fusion of unique styles from the Han, Mongolian and Tibetan cultures.
